Our doctors are available to consult with you regarding your pet’s medical emergency during regular business hours. We will triage your pet’s symptoms and address any specific concerns via phone, and then give appropriate medical advice. This may typically include an emergency exam visit either at our facility or at one of the many local ER hospitals in our area. After evaluation and treatment, many pets, fortunately, can be sent directly home, while some pets require hospitalization. If you are experiencing a pet emergency after hours, please go to the nearest 24-hour emergency hospital.

Signs and Symptoms Which Indicate Your Pet Should Receive Immediate Consultation/Care
- Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn’t stop within 5 minutes
- Choking, difficulty breathing or nonstop coughing and/or gagging
- Bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, coughing up blood, or blood in urine
- Inability to urinate or pass feces (stool), or obvious pain associated with urinating or passing stool
- Injuries to your pet’s eye(s)
- You suspect or know your pet has eaten something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)
- Seizures and/or staggering
- Fractured bones, severe lameness, or inability to move leg(s)
- Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
- Heat stress or heatstroke
- Severe vomiting or diarrhea – more than 2 episodes in a 24-hour period, or either of these combined with obvious illness or any other problems listed here
- Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
- Unconsciousness

The ASPCA website provides a list of common household plants that are poisonous and non-poisonous to dogs and cats.
In addition, the website lists several foods that pets should avoid.
Not all foods that are healthy for humans are safe for pets. Please call us immediately if you think your pet has eaten any of the foods in this list or any plants from the above lists. We can be reached any time at (203) 795-6091. Try to have the estimated time your pet ate the food as well as the quantity. Call as soon as you discover that your pet has ingested any of the following foods. This will allow us to make the best decision regarding your pet’s care.
Alcoholic Drinks, Avocados, Chocolate, Coffee, and Caffeine, Macadamia Nuts, Milk, Onion, Garlic and Chives, Raw/Undercooked Meat, Eggs and Bones, Xylitol and Yeast Dough.
